Health Insurance Sales – Known Cost of Premium VS. Unknown Cost of Medical Treatment: Article 11 of Randy’s Closing Insurance Deals Series.

What are the three largest public concerns in America today? Have you given it any thought? Sure you have. It would be impossible not to. Of course the 3 concerns are: healthcare, energy, and wars which all add up to our very uncertain economic situation. I have no doubt that the most disturbing aspects of our current posture as a nation is our future is unknown and includes some huge known problems.
Our nation like any other is made up of people. Human beings with goals and dreams that love their families and for the most part just go to work each day and try to live their lives the best way they can.
It is in our collective nature as humans to fear that which we cannot control and have no way of knowing. Think about our nation’s 3 largest concerns. Would they all be as scary if we knew the specific scheduled, amazingly positively, victorious ending date for all three of them? Of course not. We would have some semblance of control restored to our lives.
As a health insurance agent, right now, you have the opportunity to help people with their general levels of perceived happiness and security (personal perceptions are real – people believe only what they choose to believe) and one of their 3 largest pragmatic concerns. You can help them change the unknown cost of health care and medical treatment into the known cost of health insurance premium.
Pause for a moment and think about that passage in the serenity prayer that says “God, grant me the strength to change the things I can – to accept the things I can’t and the wisdom to know the difference between the two.”
I want to leave you with a real life example that happened to me February 14th 2009. Just a couple of weeks ago I woke up with a very bad headache that simply would not go away.
By 9am I was at the emergency room at Rex Hospital on Lake Boone Trail in Raleigh NC. My wife tells me we were there until around 4pm and back home with pain medication in hand around 5pm. That bill alone is $3051.65 without an overnight stay.
Now consider this. They did a CT scan / head, that they would not have done had I not been insured. So, because I have good health insurance, I was able to choose my hospital, go to it when I needed to and receive all the care I needed for a known monthly cost (With a little risk sharing) instead of a huge unknown cost of medical treatment that could have been, God only knows how much larger had I been admitted to the hospital.
